The Worcester Red Sox will be playing under a new league name starting this season, Major League Baseball announced Wednesday.

The WooSox are the Triple A minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The WooSox, who last season were within the Triple-A East division of Minor League Baseball, will be reorganized into the International League, the former name of Triple-A East.

The decision to rename the league comes after the MLB renamed all leagues in 2020 following an overhaul of Minor League Baseball. The renaming will apply to all Double-A leagues, as well as Triple-A West, which will now be known as the Pacific Coast League.

“Major League Baseball is pleased to restore the historic names for each of the minor leagues that our fans are familiar with,” said Peter Woodfork, senior vice president of minor league operations and development at the MLB, in a press release. “We are excited for what the future holds for each of these leagues and the communities that make up Minor League Baseball.”
