A new wine shop run by wife business partners has opened on the Green Street side of Worcester Public Market.
Dubbed Canal District Wines, owners Rachel and Olivia Scanlon are planning a grand opening event on Friday.
Rachel separately works as principal of an elementary school in Hudson; Olivia serves as managing director of the BrickBox Theater in the Jean McDonough Arts Center, as well as artistic director of The Hanover Theatre Repertory, as well as a lecturer in acting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Both are new to the business of wine.
“After our umpteenth trip to Shrewsbury to stock up on bottles, we decided to create a local wine store where all are welcome,” Olivia said in a statement.
In addition to being owned and run by women, the company also works with Gilbert Distributors of Shrewsbury, a woman-owned company. More than half of the wines carried at Canal District Wines reportedly come from women and Black winemakers.
The store plans to offer weekly wine tastings following its grand opening.
