Whole Foods to close 9 locations

Whole Foods, which will soon move its North Atlantic headquarters to Marlborough, is closing nine of its 400-plus stores, all in the Midwest, South and West.

The Texas chain has been a victim of its own success, as far more of its competitors stock the organic products that once made Whole Foods a mecca for those types of foods. The stores being closed this spring are in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico and Utah.

Whole Foods will move its North Atlantic headquarters, with about 200 jobs, to Marlborough this spring. Its first Central Massachusetts store is slated to open this summer on Route 9 in Shrewsbury as part of the Lakeway Commons development.
