Whittier rehab hospital gains new accreditation

Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough has earned new accreditation as both a long-term acute care hospital and an inpatient rehabilitation facility.

That designation from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services allows Whittier to accommodate all post-acute care patients, according to the hospital.

Whittier, which also has a center north of Boston in Haverhill, can now care for short- and long-term rehab care, transitional and outpatient care, and home-based care. Whittier’s new inpatient rehabilitation facility had 124 admissions in the last quarter of the year with an average stay of 12 days. The facility provides an intense rehab program for those able to tolerate three hours of intense rehabilitation per day at least five days per week.

Whittier’s long-term acute care unit had 923 admissions last year and an average stay of nearly 22 days.
