Where is the love?

Firm partner, former chamber head, forced to choose between accounting, academia

As it's been since last year, Mark L. Love's name can be found among the business administration faculty at Worcester State College.

However, his name is no longer on the letterhead of accounting firm Graham Huckins & Shepherd, which for the past three years was known as Graham Love Huckins & Shepherd.

Firm partner John Graham said Love hasn't been with the firm since late April.

"He wanted to be a full-time college professor, and you cannot be a full-time professor and a full-time partner at a CPA firm simultaneously. You have to make a choice."

Love said he withdrew his partnership from the firm and agreed that the responsibilities of being partner at an accounting firm and the responsibilities of a full-time professor are a lot to carry. But he hasn't drawn a line between accounting and teaching. In fact, he's got his own public accounting office on Park Avenue, and he said the practice of accounting and teaching accounting is strongly encouraged by both the Massachusetts Association of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs.

"When I joined them (Graham Huckins) in 2004, I was teaching, and the understanding was I would continue to do both. I enjoyed it, and I was asked to teach even more..." Love said.

Before being hired on as partner at Graham Huckins, Love was president of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. By many accounts, his stint there was a disaster.

Graham said, "the chamber was the chamber, and accounting is accounting. We gave him an opportunity to succeed again in the accounting world. A lot of people change careers."

Before the chamber, Love was partner at the Worcester accounting firm Bollus Lynch, which at the time was known as Love Bollus Lynch & Rogers.

Michael Bollus wouldn't comment on Love's leaving Bollus Lynch, his stint at the chamber, or his most recent move. "I don't want to get into the middle of it right now," he said.
