A 7.5-acre trash and recycling facility in Fitchburg has sold to a waste-to-energy company with a facility in Millbury.
The buyer, Wheelabrator, paid just over $1 million to AKS Recycling, the owner of the facility off Crawford Street just north of Fitchburg Municipal Airport. Both firms are based in New Hampshire.
Wheelabrator has a facility in Millbury highly visible to passersby on the Massachusetts Turnpike, as well as three others in the state, in Gloucester, North Andover and Saugus. The facilities burn trash to create energy.
The industry publication Waste Dive reported in July that Wheelabrator acquired AKS' owner, Charles George Companies, a third-generation firm whose services also include commercial and industrial waste removal.
AKS Recycling and Wheelabrator didn't return messages seeking comment.
The Millbury site, which began operations in 1987, creates enough energy to power 49,940 homes in Millbury and surrounding communities, as well as the facility's own operations, according to Wheelabrator. It processes up to 1,500 tons of household and business trash each day.
Wheelabrator's purchase of the Fitchburg site closed July 7. The roughly 6.5-acre site was last assessed by the City of Fitchburg at nearly $1.1 million.
