Pittsfield-based Berkshire Bank has opened its first office in Central Massachusetts.
The bank, owned by publicly traded Berkshire Hills Bancorp., opened a commercial banking office yesterday at 45 Lyman St. in Westborough.
The office will be led by a team that worked together for 20 years in the Central Massachusetts market for Sovereign Bank, Berkshire said.
The company has more than $4 billion in assets and more than 60 branches in Massachusetts, New York and Vermont. It recently merged with Hartford-based Connecticut Bank and Trust Co. and has expanded its existing regional headquarters in Springfield.
Berkshire made an attempt to move into the area market in 2009, when it bid to purchase Worcester-based Commonwealth National Bank, but West Springfield-based United Financial Bancorp succeeded in buying Commonwealth.
