Annie E. Fales Elementary School in Westborough, which began classes in November, is one of the first net-positive-energy public schools built in Massachusetts, according to a press release from the architect and the builder.

The 400-student school will produce more energy annually than is required to power the school, which was designed by HMFH Architects, Inc. of Cambridge and built by Providence-based Gilbane Building Co.

The school is fully powered by electricity, using on-site geothermal heating and cooling and a rooftop solar array system, per the release. These systems are expected to generate 10% annual surplus energy.

The Town of Westborough is aiming to be 100% free of carbon emissions for all its facilities by 2035.

Located at 50 Eli Whitney St., the school officially opened in November. The old building is now being demolished and will be used for parking and a playground.
