A Westborough rehabilitation and skilled nursing home has agreed to pay $37,500 to resolve allegations the facility failed to take adequate steps after a patient fell 19 times at the facility before she died following a fall.
The settlement was announced by Attorney General Maura Healey on Wednesday when she announced settlements with six other nursing homes potentially totaling more than $570,000.
According to Healey, the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center of Westborough, operated by Salmon Health and Retirement, failed to contact the patient’s nurse practitioner or provide pain medication after the patient’s 20th fall. That patient ultimately died.
In addition to the fine, the facility will implement a three-year compliance program to include updated policies, annual training programs and yearly audits that will be reported to Healey’s office.
According to the settlement document, the patient’s falls occurred between October 2014 and July 2015.
The facility broke compliance with health regulations when the patient didn’t receive adequate supervision and assistance devices or pain medication when she fell despite her complaints of soreness.
In a statement, Salmon pointed to the time of the incidents, which occurred more than three years ago.
The company said it took "extraordinary measures" to improve upon factors that led to the situation.
The company also pointed to the facility's recent inclusion in the U.S. News and World Report's list of top nursing homes in the nation.
"The inspiration to deliver a healthier, richer life for those we serve runs three generations deep in the Salmon family and is something we believe our entire team strives for each days it cares for and serves each of our residents with dignity and respect," the company said.
Other nursing homes named in settlements include Oxford Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Haverhill, Jewish Nursing Home of Longmeadow, Woodbriar Health Center of Wilmington, Braemoor Health Center of Brockton, The Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Everett and the Wakefield Center.
