NEC Energy Solutions of Westborough has been chosen to provide energy storage for a major energy efficiency project in Northern Ireland.
NEC will provide 100 megawatts of energy storage, it announced Tuesday, in a project already under construction the company says is part of a Northern Ireland initiative to have a sustainable electricity system. Relying on renewable energy today is otherwise too unpredictable because of the intermittent nature of wind power.
Northern Ireland already uses renewable resources for 44% of its electricity consumption, beating its own goal of 40% by this year.
NEC’s energy storage capabilities will allow Northern Ireland to store much more of energy created by wind turbines until it needs to be used. The company’s storage projects are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2021.
The agreement, which includes two 50-megawatt storage sites, includes engineering, procurement and construction services. NEC didn’t disclose the cost of the work.
