Westborough energy firm inks $49M federal prison deal

Courtesy Federal Bureau of Prisons Improvements will be made to the Federal Bureau of Prisons facility in Philadelphia.

Westborough energy services firm NORESCO will provide energy and water efficiency and capital infrastructure upgrades at two prisons on the East Coast in a $49-million contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The two facilities are the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Fort Dix in New Jersey and Federal Detention Center (FDC) in Philadelphia.

The contract will reduce water consumption by 61 percent and electricity use by 20 percent at FCI Fort Dix and will reduce those same measures by 44 percent and 27 percent at FDC Philadelphia. Improvements will be made through efficient lighting, HVAC upgrades, solar panel systems and electronic monitoring of water and electric systems.

The facility improvements to be implemented under the ESPC are funded entirely through guaranteed energy savings, requiring no upfront capital investment from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Since 2003, NORESCO has contracted with the Federal Bureau of Prisons for more than $110 million in building system improvements funded by savings from energy and water reductions.
