A Boston real estate investment trust has chosen a Westborough distribution warehouse as part of a new rooftop solar panel initiative.
The 121,700-square-foot building at 35 Otis St. in Westborough is one of four planned solar-panel systems announced Tuesday by STAG Industrial, which owns nearly 92 million square feet of rental space across the country, including 1.4 million square feet at 10 properties in Massachusetts.
The Westborough warehouse is leased by Pittsburgh electronics distribution company Wesco International, according to the property's listing on Loopnet.com.
The Westborough building is planned to create 1.1 megawatts of energy as part of 8.5 megawatts expected from the four properties in Massachusetts and a fifth in New Jersey, according to STAG. That energy is enough to power nearly 1,000 homes with solar energy, the company said.
Work began in the early spring, with the systems expected to be online by the fourth quarter of the year or sooner. The project is part of the state's Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target, or SMART, program, which incentivizes utilizing solar energy.
