Westborough Co. Gets Life Science Grant

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center has awarded $500,000 to medical sensor company Reflectance Medical Inc. of Westborough as part of a $2 million round of Small Business Matching Grants.

According to the center, Reflectance is working on securing regulatory approvals to commercialize its CareGuide monitor. The product is designed to assess a patient's metabolic status quickly to help treat internal bleeding, cardiac failure and sepsis.

The award was part of the second round of the grants, which are given to early-stage life science companies that have also received federal funding. They are part of the $1 billion Life Sciences Act of 2008.

The other companies receiving funding in the current round of grants are Advantagene Inc. of Newton, Hepregen Inc. of Medford and Immunetics Inc. of Boston.
