James A. Welu is stepping down as director of the Worcester Art Museum.
Welu has been director for 24 years. He will remain as director while a replacement is sought by the museum’s board of trustees and will serve as director emeritus after a new director is hired.
The museum expects the search for Welu’s successor to take between six and 12 months.
Long-term plans for the museum include drawing greater attention to its collections, integrating technology for new visitor experiences and reaching out to a more diverse audience.
The museum has a collection of 35,000 paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, photography, prints, drawings and new media.
