The 134,000-square-foot, multi-level Wegmans supermarket at the Natick Mall will close later this summer.
The store opened in 2018 in a former JCPenney location. It was the first multi-level mall-based store for the supermarket chain.
The store employs 365 people: 142 full time and 223 part time. They will be offered positions at other area Wegmans, according to a Thursday press release from the Rochester, New York-based supermarket chain, announcing the closure.
“Making these decisions is never easy. However, we do it for the long-term benefit of our people, our customers, and our communities,” Brien MacKendrick, human resources director of Wegmans New England division, said in the press release. “Unfortunately, with this non-traditional location, we are unable to attract enough customers for our business model to work.”
Wegmans has five additional stores in Massachusetts, including another Central Massachusetts location in Northborough, and approximately 2,700 employees. Wegmans does not have plans to close any other stores.
The Natick Mall is owned by New York-based Brookfield Properties, a subsidiary of Canadian-based investment management giant Brookfield Corp. A Brookfield Properties spokesperson said the company does not comment on tenant matters and had no comment on future plans for the site.
