Weetabix has sold its now-defunct Clinton manufacturing facility more than two years after the cereal and snack maker announced plans to close.
The site off Green Street has been sold for $2.5 million to a limited liability corporation registered to Dmitriy Chebotarev of Fitchburg. The deal closed March 30.
Post Holdings, which acquired Weetabix in 2017, first announced plans to close the Clinton facility in February 2018. That announcement said the closure was due to take place in August 2019. Last March, the company filed notice with the state it would lay off 181 jobs effective in June or July.
"The planned closure of the facility reflects Post’s continuous improvement initiative to optimize its cereal production network and manage costs in the ready-to-eat cereal category," the St. Louis-based Post said in 2018.
The Clinton site at 1R and 3R Green St. was last assessed by the Town of Clinton at nearly $2.9 million, with 139,000 square feet of space. The oldest part of the structure dates to 1898. It stands next to the Lofts at Lancaster Mills, an apartment complex.
Chebotarev bought a more than 98% stake in the property, with the small remainder going to Linda and Edward Joseph Boca, a couple in California.
Weetabix still owns two adjacent properties: a more than 100,000-square-foot building at 20 Cameron St. connecting by footbridge to 1R and 3R Green St., and 99 Green St., which includes more than 45,000 square feet of space. Those two properties were last assessed at a combined more than $6.8 million.
The Clinton site is the second in Central Massachusetts that Weetabix has sold since announcing its planned closure. The company sold in October 2018 a 45,000-square-foot warehouse at 12 Industrial Drive in Sterling. The property sold for just over $2 million to GFI Partners, a Boston real estate firm.
What are the new owners plans for the property?
