The Patriot, a weekly newspaper serving Webster, Dudley and Oxford, will cease publication with its May 8 issue, according to announcement on its website. Its general manager and editor cited economic reasons in the decision.
"For the last two years we've tried to make the paper a positive vehicle for news about the people, places, and events in the communities of Webster, Dudley and Oxford," wrote Barbara Van Reed. "We've heard from many of you that you really enjoy reading The Patriot, and so I think we succeeded in our mission."
Van Reed said The Patriot’s sister publication, Yankee Shopper, will continue to publish, with many of the company’s staff staying on to help make it a "local-business-oriented newspaper."
"The economics of keeping a subscription-based newspaper alive are very difficult, and The Patriot, like many other news publications, has been held hostage by that as well," Van Reed wrote.
Van Reed said subscribers who want refunds for the remainder of their subscriptions should send a note or email. If not, or if they choose otherwise, The Patriot will donate leftover funds to the Hubbard Emergency Room fund, with the donations being matched by an anonymous donor.
