Webster contractor WPI Construction, Inc. will pay the state $150,000 to settle allegations employees of the company mishandled asbestos while working on a project at the Kennedy Circle public housing complex in Haverhill, which houses low-income seniors, Attorney General Maura Healey announced on Tuesday.
WPI Construction is registered to owner Wojciech Piwowarczyk of Webster, according to public records with the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth.
Healey’s office accused WPI Construction, Inc. of knowingly conducting work on buildings containing asbestos without notifying the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection ahead of time, according to a Tuesday press release from the AG’s office. Specifically, WPI employees allegedly left asbestos-contaminated debris on the ground outside the buildings they were working on and sent debris to facilities which weren’t equipped to handle asbestos waste.
Separately, Healey’s office alleges employees from the company transported asbestos-containing waste from Haverhill to Webster and back in an open-topped trailer without wetting and containing it. Employees allegedly left asbestos in an unsecured and open dumpster at the Haverhill housing complex.
Aside from paying out $150,000, WPI’s owner and any other employee who works with asbestos will attend asbestos-handling training, according to the AG’s office.
