Weatherization Program Reaches 10K Homes

A federally-subsidized program for weatherizing homes has reached the 10,000-home milestone, according to state officials.

The Weatherization Assistance Program from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided $125 million during a three-year period to weatherize 20,000 homes. The state is halfway to its goal.

The average homeowner who has taken advantage of the program has saved 35 percent on energy costs, or $700. A total of 129 energy contractors have worked on weatherization projects.

The money is part of the $7.4 billion in ARRA funding Massachusetts received from the federal stimulus program, $6.6 billion of which has already been spent.
