WBJ wins second place at international business journalism competition

Worcester Business Journal was celebrated as the second-best newspaper of its size at the annual 2024 Alliance of Area Business Publishers journalism competition on Friday evening.

In addition, WBJ and Art Director Mitchell Hayes won a gold award as the best designed publication of its size in the AABP competition between business journals from America, Canada, and Australia. The ceremony was held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and covered content published in 2023.

“Every day, WBJ’s dedicated staff of journalists, designers, and researchers strives to provide the Central Massachusetts business audience with excellent news and market intelligence about the region,” WBJ Editor Brad Kane said. “Receiving this honor from AABP is a nice validation of those efforts, especially considering so many business journals do such amazing work across the globe.”

In awarding WBJ the silver award in the Best Newspaper category for medium-sized publications, the judges from the University of Missouri highlighted the publication’s story selection, commitment to diversity, and its design.

“Using a smaller page format than many others, this publication focuses its cover design on the theme of each issue or a few key stories inside. The cover images selected show the staff gave a lot of thought to diversity of the story subjects. Most of the stories inside are focused on the themes of each issue. The staff uses graphics and charts well to help show the stories,” the judges wrote.

In awarding the gold award to Hayes and WBJ in the Best Overall Design for medium-sized publications, the judges highlighted the overall beauty of the publication.

Well-sized, informative images, particularly the stellar portraits, stand out as delightful visual elements. Illustration and graphics complement the pages and add entry points. Consistent headline and text treatments are sophisticated and easy to read, contributing to an overall beautiful package,” the judges wrote.

The two awards from AABP came three months after the New England Newspaper & Press Association awarded WBJ with eight journalism awards in its Better Newspaper competition, specifically calling out WBJ’s longform projects, coverage of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and its 40 Under Forty publication.

In addition to WBJ’s two AABP awards, its sister publications in Maine and Connecticut won three awards each at the ceremony on Friday. MaineBiz won two design awards and a breaking news award for its coverage of the Lewiston shootings. Hartford Business Journal won for its finance reporting, opinion writing, and overall excellence. All three publications are owned by New England Business Media.
