The Worcester Business Journal won three awards on Saturday from the New England Newspaper & Press Association for WBJ's investigative reporting work, as well as the design of its 40 Under Forty publication.
In the category of Investigative/Enterprise Reporting, WBJ News Editor Grant Welker won first place for the six-part series, The Boardroom Gap, which analyzed gender diversity among leadership positions at Central Massachusetts companies and nonprofits. The series, which was published in February and March 2018, found women were vastly outnumbered among many boards and executive offices in the region, especially at public companies, some of which were found to have no women in key leadership roles for years.
"An important piece of journalism," the NENPA judges wrote of the series.
In the General News Story category, Welker won first place for the story "Worcester's overhyped renaissance" from June. The story used 28 economic indicators to gauge how well Worcester and the surrounding metro area were living up to hype claiming the city is in the midst of a renaissance. Data showed the Worcester metro area has done well in some key areas, such as median wage employment and poverty rate, compared to peer cities regionally and nationally, but Greater Worcester trails in several important categories, including population growth and per-capita gross domestic product.
In the category of Overall Design & Presentation of a Niche Product, Art Director Mitchell Hayes won third place for the August 2017 issue of WBJ featuring the 40 Under Forty winners.
"Just plain fun is the way to describe this publication -- with a lot of information packed on the pages too," the judges said. "These '40 Under Forty' editions are fairly standards fare, but this one breaks the same old, same old routine."
These NENPA Better Newspaper Competition awards were presented at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. They are one of two awards WBJ typically competes in every year, with the other being the international Alliance of Area Business Publishers awards announced in June. While AABP looks just at business journals, the NENPA awards are a competition among all newspaper publications in New England, and WBJ competes in the Specialty Publication categories.
