When Gov Charlie Baker on March 23 called on the closure of all non-essential businesses in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus, hair stylist Alexis Ledoux at the NKD Salon in Worcester already had stopping seeing customers, out of concern for the safety of her clients, herself and her husband, who is a cancer survivor. Yet, as an independent contractor, she wasn't eligible for unemployment right away and dealt with mounting bills as little money was coming in.
When hair salons were allowed to reopen on May 25, Ledoux started rescheduling clients, operating under a strong set of conditions for herself and her customers, and embracing her fears as she slowly builds her business back up to full operating strength.
