The Worcester Business Journal has received two national honors for editorial and design excellence from the Alliance of Area Business Publications (AABP), a business media industry trade group.
The WBJ received a third-place "bronze" award for best newspaper, small tabloid division, as well as a second-place "silver" award for best overall design among small tabloids at the AABP's annual convention, held last week in Nashville, Tenn. The AABP conducts an annual editorial competition among its 64 independent magazine and newspaper members in the United States, Canada and Australia.
The contest judges, from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, commended the WBJ for its "strong track record of providing smart, substantive business journalism to its audience in Central Massachusetts."
"The content pushes past predictable coverage to ask fresh, revealing questions," the judges said. "Briefs gathered across the region offer a broad spectrum of business news, while multi-part (story) packages anchor each issue to address common concerns, such as startup success stories, incentives for alternative energy sources and the pace of economic growth."
In their evaluation of the WBJ's design, the judges said: "With strong covers and inside display pages, effort is put into making stories visual at this publication. Pages like Know How, Focus and the table of contents are tightly focused, well organized and easy to read. The infographics throughout are also consistently well done."
"These awards validate our editorial mission and the seriousness with which we approach it," said WBJ Editor Rick Saia, "I'm very proud of the entire team at the WBJ for their efforts in following that mission, which is to provide timely, thoughtful and sometimes provocative coverage of business news for the Central Massachusetts business community."
Publisher Peter Stanton added, "These national AABP awards are difficult to win. Receiving two of them this year is a great honor, and speaks volumes about the quality of work coming from our editorial and design teams."
The WBJ's sister publications – MaineBiz and the Hartford (Conn.) Business Journal, also captured awards. MaineBiz won first place for overall design, and the Hartford Business Journal was a double winner with silver in best scoop – news story, and bronze for best scoop in the online category.
All three publications are owned by New England Business Media.
