The Worcester Business Development Corp. and Worcester Cultural Coalition have broken ground on the future Black Box Theatre at 20 Franklin St.
The project, according to the business group, is the next phase of redevelopment at the former Telegram & Gazette headquarters after previous redevelopment efforts have been completed, including the Worcester PopUP community theater, which opened in 2018.
The Black Box Theatre, scheduled for completion in early 2020, will accommodate up to 295 people.
WBDC purchased the 151,000-square-foot building in 2011 for $300,000. To finance the project, the organization used donations of more than $1.4 million but still hopes to raise an additional $500,000 via a public capital campaign.
Current tenants in the building include Quinsigamond Community College and Ten24 Digital Solutions.
