Waters Unveils Chemical Data Detector

The new Acquity QDA Detector from Milford-based Waters Corp.

Waters Corp. unveiled a device that week that the Milford-based company said would remove barriers to accessing molecular chemical data.

The firm’s new mass detector will allow scientists to access mass spectral data without the complexity of a mass spectrometer.  It’s aimed at food laboratories doing method development, sample profiling, quality assurance and purification.

“The Acquity QDa detector is the realization of a vision that started 20 years ago at Waters,” said Art Caputo, company president. “(It) adds a whole new dimension to separation science and is the most progressive leap forward in chromatography detection since the first photodiode detectors were introduced decades ago.”

The machine can confirm the identity of compounds with mass spectral data and quantify compounds with no ultraviolet response, Waters said. The plug-and-play detector also automates sample analysis and eliminates sample-specific adjustments for certainty in results, according to the company.

The laboratory equipment manufacturer employs nearly 1,350 in Milford, and took in about $1.83 billion in revenue in 2012.
