Waters Corp. is expanding its R&D operations for clinical diagnostics at its Wexford, Ireland facility where it employs more than 400 people responsible for manufacturing, assembly and distribution of products that include technologies used in health screening for millions of newborn babies.

Waters Corp., an analytical laboratory instrument company based in Milford, has invested $5.8 million in expanding its research and development center in Wexford, Ireland, to expand its mass spectrometry technology.

The expansion is set to be complete in 2024 and include the expansion of scientific jobs at the site, although Waters didn’t disclose how many new jobs would be added, according to its Friday press release.

The R&D center, which has been in operation for 25 years, currently employs about 400 people.

The investment, which was announced as €6 million in euros, is part of Waters’ strategic mission started in 2021 to evaluate the potential of its mass spectrometry technologies for broader uses in early disease detection, such as cancer screening. The investment will focus on improving the technology’s accuracy and early diagnosis capabilities.

“These developments have real-life impacts, improving the outcome for many conditions, including early disease detection,” Leo Varadkar, tánaiste and minister for enterprise, trade and employment in Ireland, said in the Friday press release.
