Waters Equipment Bought For Cancer Research

The National Cancer Institute has purchased systems made by Milford-based Waters Corp. to help with research into discovering biomarkers associated with cancer.

The institute's Center for Cancer Research in Maryland purchased two separate Waters systems. The research for which the systems will be used is aimed at discovering small molecules associated with cancer susceptibility and diagnosis.

The cost of the systems was not disclosed.

The molecules could also give researchers insight into the effectiveness of cancer treatments and the adverse effects of cancer medicines and other chemicals.

The Waters systems use liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to analyze samples. Using an earlier Waters chromatography system, the institute has tested 80,000 samples since 2005 in support of various research studies.
