The University of Delaware and the Milford-based Waters Corp. will launch a new innovation and research laboratory for the company on the university’s campus.
The laboratory, known as Immerse Delaware, was first announced in 2021 between the university and Waters, which produces analytical instruments for various fields of science. The lab will see collaboration between biopharmaceutical scientists working both in industry and academia to advance the field of biotherapeutics, which has seen spiked interest due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the use of the technology to create the vaccines against the virus, according to a press release from Thursday.
“Our mission to address some of the biggest challenges in the development and manufacturing of biotherapeutics requires an immense amount of work, collaboration, and diversity of thought,” said Udit Batra, CEO and president of Waters, in a press release. “Immerse Delaware will enable us to tap into an ecosystem of talent and expertise in biological manufacturing, coupled with Waters’ experience in analytical technologies, to advance and accelerate the delivery of high-quality medicines to patients.”
The lab will focus on all parts of the manufacturing process for biotherapeutics. Students, faculty, and industry researchers will all have access to the lab.
The University of Delaware was selected as a partner due to the university’s history of biomanufacturing research and proximity to the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals, or NIIMB, one of the leading biotech organizations in the country.
