The owner of a wastewater treatment facility, which services commercial properties at The Point shopping mall in Littleton, has been charged a fine of $40,000 for violating groundwater discharge regulations, according to a Wednesday report from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
The fine is charging Beaver Brook Wastewater Treatment Facility, LLC, a Mansfield-based company which services the Littleton plaza.
According to MassDEP, the company has pumped more than 2.5 million gallons of waste since 2016 to an offsite permitted wastewater treatment facility, bypassing the onsite facility, and failed to report this.
Beaver Brook also failed to report operational issues with the plant’s ability to treat wastewater generated at The Point.
Along with the penalty fine, the company is being mandated to upgrade the plant, improve management of external grease traps, and ensure funding for facility upgrades.
