Walmart has leased 181,000 square feet in Westminster for a new distribution center, according to the Connecticut real estate agency that represented the lessee.
The site, at 95 Aubuchon Drive, will be Walmart's warehouse and distribution center for the Boston-area market, according to Saugatuck Commercial Real Estate of Westport, Conn.
The Walmart facility, which Saugatuck said will begin operations in December, will take up just under half of the 397,000-square-foot building, which also includes the headquarters of Aubuchon Hardware.
The property is 33 acres and was last valued at $10.4 million, according to town records. Its owner is Westminster Realty LLC, a firm registered to the same address.
The property was chosen after an extensive process over several dozen other potential locations, Saugatuck said. The site sits a short distance between two exits off Route 2.
Walmart did not return a message to its media relations department.
Walmart's Sam's Club has opened a distribution facility at its former retail store on Tobias Boland Way in Worcester after closing the store in January 2018.
Other local major retail distribution centers include a facility in Worcester for TJX's T.J. Maxx, a BJ's Wholesale Club center in Uxbridge, and an Amazon hub in Milford.
Whatever happened to the old Sam's Club in Worcester being a distribution center?
