The sudden arrival of winter temperatures and the accompanying snow isn’t exactly great news for fans of warmer weather, but for Wachusett Mountain and ski-lovers, it’s been a sudden boon.
Wachusett Mountain Ski Area in Princeton said Thursday with snow-making machines on during low temperatures Wednesday and Thursday, the mountain has 70 percent of its terrain open. By Monday, it plans to be at 100 percent.
The mountain installed a $2-million expansion of its snow-making system last year, adding 40 computer-controlled snow-making towers and doubling its capacity to 8,000 gallons per minute. At that rate, crews can cover two trails with foot of snow overnight.
As of Friday morning, Wachusett had 11 trails and four lifts open, totaling 69 acres of space.
