This year marks 100 years of U.S. manufacturing for high-performance soles maker Vibram, and the beginning of a five-year, multimillion dollar campaign that will support innovation for the next 100 years, according to the company.
Vibram is looking to build on its 2015 acquisition of North Brookfield manufacturer and distributor Quabaug Corp. by upgrading its Quabaug Vibram Innovation facility and manufacturing machines, expanding its domestic supply chain and presence in worldwide markets, and making significant workforce investments.
In 2016 alone, $6 million has been invested in new machinery and machine upgrades, including the replacement of 30-year-old machines with more technologically advanced presses, according to the company. Investments in the company's materials testing and validation center will also be made.
Vibram has also partnered with the state to offer training in plant layout, lean initiatives and quality management to its 300 employees, and has outside educational partnerships with Worcester Polytechnic Institute, University of Massachusetts Lowell and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The company is also hiring in every department, including manufacturing, human resources, marketing, sales and finance. A special focus will be made to recruit designers, chemists, developers and engineers, including electrical and mechanical engineers, according to Vibram.
Vibram is holding a centennial celebration for itself on Friday, Sept. 16 at its Quabaug Vibram Innovation manufacturing facility in North Brookfield.
