Up to 50 veterans in Massachusetts will have the opportunity to train for careers in the medical technology field, thanks to a new program from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) and Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council (MassMEDIC).
Participants will be trained to enter the workforce in the medical device and diagnostics industries and will have opportunities to exchange knowledge with industry experts.
The MLSC said the unemployment rate for veterans nationally is 10 percent, compared to an overall average of 7.9 percent, and that veterans often return from active duty with skills relevant to the medtech industry.
The program will start with a one-day training seminar on at the University of Massachusetts-Boston on Feb. 14. Veterans will be paired with medical technology experts from across the state who will serve as mentors, guiding the veterans through their job search. After the training, participants will receive one year of support from MedicalTechnologyVeterans.org, an online social media tool and mentoring portal.
"This initiative is an exciting and strategic way to connect our veterans to booming industries," said Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Joanne F. Goldstein. "In today's armed forces, veterans acquire cutting-edge skills, which can easily transfer and translate to jobs in the life sciences sector."
Spots for veterans and mentors are still available and participation is free. Those interested in taking part should contact Beth Nicklas, MLSC general counsel and vice president for academic & workforce programs, at veterans@masslifesciences.com.
