Veterans, Inc. opens new Shrewsbury treatment center

Courtesy State and local officials -- including Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito (center) -- celebrated the opening of a new veterans treatment center in Shrewsbury last week.

Worcester-based Veterans, Inc. has opened the first veteran-specific addiction treatment and recovery center in Shrewsbury.

Located on 22 acres, the facility - dubbed Independence Hall - includes 70 beds for both inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment services for veterans.

According to the organization, the treatment center is the first of its kind in the country.

The 55,000-square-foot facility, formerly run as a homeless shelter for veterans by the organization,, was officially opened Friday with a ribbon cutting ceremony after a $2-million upgrade to the complex.

The facility opens as the state and country wrestle with an opioid epidemic.

“This truly is a watershed moment, not only for our agency, but for veterans and their families throughout New England,” said Executive Director Denis Leary in a press release. “2016 marked the tipping point in the opiate epidemic when opiate overdose became the leading cause of death for anyone in our country under the age of 50, and Independence Hall will help to end that epidemic and help lead veterans into healthy recovery.”

The nonprofit organization is planning a $6-million renovation at its Worcester building at the corner of Salisbury and Grove streets.
