Venture Funding On Rebound

Exits for U.S. venture-backed companies rose significantly in 2010, but the money they raised was still significantly down from 2007 levels, according to Dow Jones VentureSource.

The industry tracker found that 514 companies achieved liquidity in 2010, for a total of $39.3 billion. That's a 25 percent increase in the number of exits from 2009, and a 72 percent increase in capital garnered.

The total number of exits approached the 613 that occurred in 2007, but the money raised was dramatically lower than that year's $69.1 billion.

Mergers and acquisitions accounted for 445 of the 2010 deals and $33.9 billion in money raised. Buyouts by private equity firms represented 23 deals and $1.9 billion.
