Variantyx develops genome test for single DNA sample

Framingham genome testing company Variantyx says it is the first to develop a test that can identify tiny variances and changes from a single DNA sample.

The test, dubbed Variantyx Unity, can identify small sequence changes, structural variants, trinucleotide repeat expansions and mitochondrial variants from just one DNA samples, eliminating the need for multiple tests.

The test allows geneticists greater insight into molecular cases of rare genetic disorders and allows them to diagnose rare conditions more quickly and efficiently, the company said.

In a statement included in the company’s Wednesday press release, Dr. Olaf Bodamer, an associate chief of genetics and genomics at Boston Children’s Hospital, said the test should provide more information about individualized management and care.
