Uxbridge eyes six marijuana businesses, two shops

Deep Roots Inc. wants to open a cannabis cultivation and manufacturing facility at this Uxbridge location.
Uxbridge could be home to at least six cannabis businesses, as the town’s Board of Selectmen earlier this week approved two new host community agreements for a two cultivation facilities and a retail store.
The small town's board approved a host community agreement for Deep Roots Inc., which is seeking a cannabis microbusiness license to cultivate and manufacture cannabis products.
That product won’t be sold at the company’s 420 West St. location. Instead, it will be delivered wholesale to dispensary partners, including Caroline’s Cannabis, which is seeking final state approval to open a retail store in Uxbridge.
According to Deep Roots CEO Michael Brais, the location likely wouldn’t be in full swing until late 2019 or early 2020.
To supplement what may be a slow income to start, the company has an agreement with a New England Native American tribe to cultivate hemp, cannabis’ non-psychoactive cousin.
Once the facility is up and running to full capacity in 2021, the company is expecting its high-end, specialty products to bring in $10.5 million in annual revenue.
The board also approved an amended host community agreement for cultivation and an additional retail agreement for Grass Appeal at 79 River Road.
The cultivation and manufacturing agreements were approved last month, but the community impact fee in that document was 1.25 percent of the company’s gross sales, which is what the town uses for medical agreements.
On Monday, that vote was rescinded in favor of an agreement calling for 1.75 percent of the company’s gross sales. Since then, the company has decided to add a retail component to the facility, which will bring the town 3 percent of those gross annual sales.
Four other companies have already received Uxbridge approvals and have submitted applications to the Cannabis Control Commission.
Three have received provisional approval from the state, including Caroline’s Cannabis for retail, Gibby’s Garden for a microbusiness and Baked Bean LLC for product manufacturing.
Blackstone Valley Naturals, LLC has also submitted an application for a microbusiness.
