Eversource and National Grid today announced the completion of the Interstate Reliability Project, an undertaking that the companies said will improve delivery of power to customers in New England and will strengthen the region’s electric grid.

The $483 million project included station upgrades and the installation of a new 345-kilovolt transmission line along 75 miles of adjacent rights-of-way throughout 18 towns in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The project will expand regional access to future renewable energy resources and will make it easier for existing renewables to reach areas they couldn’t reach before, by strengthening the backbone of the grid. It will also lead to millions of dollars of new, annual property tax revenues in the 18 cities and towns it runs through.

According to a press release, farmland was protected as conservation land and special attention was given to critical wildlife habitats during construction. Since work began in early 2014, hundreds of workers were employed to work on the project.
