U.S. Unemployment Rate Down To 9.7%

The country's unemployment rate fell to 9.7 percent in January from 10 percent the previous month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The bureau said the number of unemployed people was 14.8 million during the month.

In January, there were 2.5 million people the bureau considers "marginally attached" to the labor force. The marginally attached are not counted as unemployed because they have not searched for work in the month preceding the bureau's survey.

A year ago, the number of people considered marginally attached to the labor force was 409,000.

Among the marginally attached, 1.1 million were considered "discouraged." They are not currently looking for work because they believe no jobs are available to them.

The remainder of the marginally attached haven't looked for work in a month because of school attendance or family obligations, the bureau said.
