The nation's jobless rate fell slightly in March to 8.2 percent, but employers added only 120,000 jobs, which was below economists' expectations and broke a three-month string of job gains that exceeded 200,000 per month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday morning.
The report cited job gains of about 37,000 in both the manufacturing and leisure and hospitality industries as the economy showed signs of continued - although moderate - growth. The government also reported a gain of about 31,000 in professional and business services, as well as 26,000 in health care.
Within the leisure and hospitality industry, employment in food services and drinking places rose by 37,000 in March and has risen by 563,000 since a low point in February 2010. Most of the gains in manufacturing came from motor vehicles and parts (11,000), machinery (7,000) and fabricated metals (5,000).
