Sanderson Engine Development of Upton has been named "Emerging Company of the Year" by consulting firm Frost & Sullivan.
The award recognizes the company's "Sanderson rocker-arm mechanism, which does away with the crankshafts and other components of traditional engines and replaces them with a low-friction, highly efficient mechanism that can power anything from lawnmowers to hybrid vehicles to wind power generators.
The company currently holds $1.1 million in license options on the technology, which it has been developing for more than 10 years, and has collected $7 million in project funding from manufacturers. Sanderson claims the technology is smaller and 10-25 percent more fuel efficient than traditional crankshaft engines.
The Frost & Sullivan award recognizes technology innovation, management and market growth. The consulting firm said Sanderson's compact, high efficiency engines hold "lucrative market potential."
