Upright businesses net BBB awards

By jeffrey t. lavery

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Central New England honored local firms on May 18 for ethical business models and introduced a new category for high school graduates recognized for their leadership skills.

The event at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Worcester drew nearly 450 attendees and recognized several companies reaching anniversaries ranging from 5 to 50 years of BBB membership. Capping off the evening were the Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics, which honored companies with outstanding integrity in business practices, customer service, and community involvement.

Among those businesses honored with the Torch award was West Boylston-based Checkerboard Ltd., a stationary manufacturer. President Micah Chase noted the significance of the accomplishment: "There is no award more meaningful than one for marketplace ethics," said Chase.

Additional Torch award recipients included Fletcher, Tilton & Whipple, P.C., a Worcester-based law firm,

and Holden-based Sunnyside Ford. Massachusetts Health Care Services and Paul Davis Restoration were tagged with honorable mentions. Others honored:

• The Community Service Award was given to Paul Shulsas of Shulsas Florist and Nathaniel Pratt, a student intern from Worcester State College.

• Student ethics awards were presented to Christopher Cerrone of Shrewsbury High School; Christine Chalifoux of David Prouty High School; and Anh Phan of the University Park Campus.

Keynote speaker John Stossel, from the ABC network program ‘20/20’, noted that agencies like the BBB help business thrive. "BBB’s do good work," said Stossel. "They help to level the marketplace far better than clumsy government."
