Homeowners in Massachusetts who are struggling to make mortgage payments as a result of losing their jobs could get up to $50,000 from the federal government.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said Massachusetts has been allocated $61 million of the $1 billion provided by the Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program. The program was created by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
Homeowners may apply for up to $50,000, interest free, and in some cases without a repayment requirement, to help pay mortgages that are in arrears, delinquent taxes, insurance or up to two years of monthly mortgage payments.
Homeowners in 32 states and Puerto Rico are eligible for the funds.
Every New England state except Rhode Island is eligible to receive HUD funding.
