Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Co., a subsidiary of Tennessee-based insurance company Unum, opened an office at the One Mercantile building in Worcester, which will serve as the hub for the company’s New England operation.
The company has occupied the former office of Watertown-based Tufts Health Plan on the ground floor. Currently there are three people working there, but district managers will use the space for training and recruiting, and the company is working on hiring a district manager for Worcester, which will result in more people working out of the office, said Tom Ackerman, Colonial Life territory manager for New England, via email on Friday.
The location appealed to Colonial Life because of the company’s relationship with Unum, the proximity of hotels and restaurants, and Worcester being a central location to the rest of New England, Ackerman said.
The One Mercantile building was originally branded as the Unum building, but the Tennessee insurance company announced it would close its Worcester office in 2020 in favor of having its 400 Greater Worcester employees work from home.
The building was rebranded as One Mercantile in 2021.
