Unum donated over $12.7M in 2015; built Worcester partnerships

PHOTO/COURTESY The Unum Group building was the first of two anchor structures that ushered in the CitySquare development this year in downtown Worcester.

Unum and its employees donated more than 88,000 volunteer hours and $12.7 million to charitable organizations in 2015.

The Tennessee-based insurance group with over 500 employees in Central Massachusetts and an office in downtown Worcester donated to numerous nonprofits, including the Boys and Girls Club of Worcester. Unum primarily focuses its charitable efforts on supporting public education initiatives. Other areas of support include health and wellness and arts and culture.

The company has built additional partnerships in Worcester, being instrumental in creating education programs with South High Community School in Worcester, according to a press release. These educational programs provide a collective good to the cities in which they operate, according to Joe Foley, senior vice president of Unum.

“They not only improve the educational outlook of children and young adults in our hometowns, they help us build strong communities by developing tomorrow’s leaders,” he said.

In addition to the 88,000 volunteer hours, more than 350 Unum employees lend their leadership expertise as board members for various charitable organizations, according to the company.
