Unitil Earnings Hurt By Weather, Customer Conservation

Unitil Corp., a New Hampshire-based utility that provides electricity to several North Worcester County towns reported a profit of $6.5 million for the first quarter compared to $9.1 million a year ago.

Electricity revenue dipped from $62.1 million to $50.8 million. Gas revenues decreased from $72.4 million to $61.1 million.

Electricity sales were hurt by “energy conservation efforts by our customers,” and mild winter weather, which resulted in lower than average use by customers.

The company said there were 7.6 percent fewer “heating degree days” in the first quarter compared to last year.

Natural gas sales decreased by 2.7 percent during the quarter.
