United Way of Tri-County in Framingham has received grants totaling $499,983 to upgrade parts of its food delivery programs, according to an announcement Tuesday from the Gov. Charlie Baker Administration.
The funding is part of a larger $3.3-million round of funding through the Food Security Infrastructure Grant Program, which was established as part of the state’s COVID-19 response efforts.
“These grants are targeted to connect the commonwealth’s local food producers and distributors to the families and communities that are currently most underserved by fresh food options,” said Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, in a statement.
The monies awarded to United Way of Tri-County come by way of three separate grants. The first and largest totals $293,856, and will be allocated to relocate and upgrade the organization’s MetroWest Cross Dock Facility, which is where transfers take place between the Greater Boston Food Bank and Tri-County food banks in the MetroWest, Greater Marlborough and Greater Clinton regions, according to the announcement. Some 26 food programs pick up their food from Cross Dock each week.
Facility upgrades will focus on expanding storage capacity.
The second pool of money totals $128,006 and will be used to purchase a refrigerated truck and expand cold storage at two of Tri-County’s hot meal program facilities.
The third grant, for $78,121, will go toward purchasing refrigeration equipment and a truck, which will increase delivery capacity at Tri-County’s WHEAT Community Connections program.
