Following the opening of a new UniBank branch in Worcester’s Canal District, the Whitinsville-based bank is funding gasoline priced at 99 cents per gallon on Wednesday at a station in Kelley Square.

UniBank opened its new full-service Worcester branch on Monday in the first floor of The Revington apartment complex at 1 Green Island Blvd., according to a Monday press release. In celebration, UniBank will be offering the discounted gas from 7-10 a.m. Wednesday at Chop Chop Convenience/Gulf gas station at 185 Madison St.

The 99 cent gas price is more than $2 below both the state’s and Worcester County’s average of $3.02 per gallon as of Tuesday, according to travel group AAA Northeast.

“UniBank is delighted to plant a flag in this exciting neighborhood, where WooSox fans, small businesses and many new residents are finding out why Worcester is such a wonderful place to live and work. Take our word for it: diversity, community and opportunity define the Canal District, and we want to support the continued growth of this neighborhood,” Michael Welch, CEO of UniBank, said in the release.

With $2.3 billion in local deposits, UniBank is the sixth largest bank in Central Massachusetts when ranked by local deposits as of June 30, 2023. At the time, the bank operated 14 branches with 252 employees and $2.6 billion in total assets.

“For years, the Canal District neighbors and business owners have asked for a bank to meet their needs and UniBank has stepped up with a substantial commitment as they have in the community in many other ways,” Timothy Murray, president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, said in the UniBank release.
