Local unemployment rates are up approximately half a percentage point across Central Massachusetts labor markets, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Tuesday by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

In Greater Worcester, unemployment rose from 2.5% in May to 3.0% in June.

In the Leomonster-Gardner area, the unemployment rate bumped up the same rate as Worcester, from 2.5% to 3%.

In the Framingham metropolitan area, unemployment increased by half a percentage point from 2.0% in May to 2.5% in June.

The Athol micropolitan area saw a similar increase of just under half a percentage point, from 3.0% to 3.4%.

Despite the increase, all four labor markets are still below last year’s unemployment rate, which was over 4% in each area except Framingham, at 3.3%, in June 2022.

The Central Mass. areas are following the statewide trend. Some 22 labor markets in the state saw unemployment rise month-over-month, with only two seeing a decrease. Still, unemployment rates are down in 24 labor markets as compared to June 2022.

The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the month of June 2023 was 2.6%, down 0.2 percentage points from the revised May estimate, according to the BLS.
