Unemployment rises in Central Mass.

Unemployment in Central Massachusetts jumped significantly in January but is down from January of last year, the Patrick administration said today.

Greater Worcester’s seasonally unadjusted jobless rate rose from 7.2 to 7.6 percent over the month, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. That’s significantly below the 8.4 percent unemployment rate recorded in January 2013.

The Framingham area also experienced a slight increase in unemployment, from 5.3 to 5.6 percent, in January, though the rate is still lower than the 6.2 percent measured 12 months earlier.

Meanwhile, the Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area saw a rise in joblessness from 8.8 to 9.3, one percent lower than the 10.3 percent unemployment rate in January 2013.

Statewide, seasonally unemployment in January 2014 was 7.1 percent, 0.4 percent higher than December. Over the year, joblessness decreased 0.7 percent from 7.8 percent in January 2013.

Last week, the state said the statewide seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for January fell 0.3 percent to 6.8 percent.

The number of people employed in January 2014 fell by 1,143 in Greater Worcester, 475 in MetroWest and 780 in North Central Massachusetts. Meanwhile, the number of people unemployed in January increased by 537 in Framingham, 330 in North Central and 1,405 in Worcester.
